And the field of Queen Elizabeth’s High School was the perfect setting for the challenge.

Hundreds, if not thousands of spectators gathered to cheer on the race cars and their drivers who were all decked out in team colours.

“It was a roaring success and everyone seemed to really have fun,” said Rotary president Tony Gamwell.

“This was our second Grand Prix event and we raised a fair bit for charity, as well as giving the community a good day out.”

Olympic torchbearer Megan Ainsworth was on hand with her torch for a lap of honour before the race, and even the chairman of West Lindsey District Council, Coun Jessie Milne took a turn in the seat.

Football activities were also on offer for the under-11s.

Rotarian Julian Needham said: “A lot of effort went into planning the day and we’re glad all the teams had such good fun.”

Winner of the best dressed car category was the Grafters Brewery team, from the Half Moon pub in Willingham-by-Stow. They decorated their car with a beer barrel and wore eye-catching team T-shirts.

But overall winners were the Rilmac Yard Rats who came first in the fastest lap contest the most laps completed.

“There was great community spirit on the day and we look forward to seeing just how much we’ve raised for charity,” said Tony Glapwell.
