Political opinion: Jake Richards MP - Delivering a fairer justice system for our towns and villages

Since becoming your MP for Rother Valley and more recently taking on the role of Justice Minister, my priority has been simple; to make sure national decisions in Westminster deliver real benefits for people here in the constituency.

Too often, residents in Dinnington, Anston, Woodsetts, Kiveton, and across Rother Valley tell me they feel cut off from the systems meant to protect and support them. Whether it’s victims waiting months for their day in court, small firms caught up in legal red tape, or families struggling to access advice, justice can feel remote. My job at the Ministry of Justice is to close that gap.

That means tackling the court backlog so local cases are heard faster and closer to home. It means supporting legal-aid providers locally so people can get advice without travelling miles away to better funded areas. And it means strengthening community sentencing and rehabilitation, so offenders can rebuild their lives through local work placements and training, rather than falling back into crime.

In our area, that approach links directly with our wider regeneration plans. A fairer, faster justice system helps make our high streets safer and gives victims confidence to report crimes. By improving access to legal advice, we’re helping residents resolve issues early, from housing disputes to small business challenges.

And through new funding for probation and youth-offending services, we’re supporting practical programmes that keep young people out of trouble and in employment.

This government was elected to deliver change, not slogans. As Justice Minister, I’ll continue to make sure reforms don’t just look good on paper, they make life better in places like ours.

My message is clear: Rother Valley deserves the same access to justice, safety, and opportunity as anywhere else in Britain. I’ll keep using my role in government to make sure our communities are not left behind again.
