After months of planning Misterton Parish Council’s contractors have started work on Phase One of their restoration and conservation project.

The initial work to have the monument cleaned by specialist conservation and heritage contractors has been completed.

Over 90 years of dirt, grime and algae have been removed and the War Memorial was then sprayed with a biocide to finally kill off any remaining algae spores.

The War Memorial Trust insisted that any cleaning process must not involve chemicals or abrasives so the parish council used high pressure steam.

The council also took advice from Scottish Heritage on the specialist cleaning of granite monuments.

Taking place over the next few weeks will be the sealing of joints using original lime mortar, renovating the chains linking the balustrades and restoring damaged inscriptions.

Phase Two, which includes the replacement of unsightly tarmac and concrete kerbs with granite, will take place in late spring.

Even though the cleaning was completed only a few days ago the Parish Council have already received many comments from delighted local residents.

This restoration project is being partly funded by Bassetlaw Council.
