Council View: Christmas will be here before you know it

It seems to arrive earlier and earlier each year, but the signs of Christmas have already begun to show and before you know it, the next John Lewis Christmas advert will be pulling at our heart strings.

In Bassetlaw there are festive celebrations on the horizon with the Christmas lights event in Worksop taking place on November 26.

This event has again been organised by the Worksop Business Forum and is being supported by the council.

It promises to be a fantastic event and I hope as many people as possible will come out to celebrate and also support our local community and businesses.

With this in mind, the council will again be encouraging people to do some of their Christmas shopping locally, supporting local businesses, by offering free parking in all council car parks in the run up to Christmas.

This initiative will start on December 5 and free parking will be available from 2pm every day until January 2.

However, among all the festive celebrations, we must also remember that some people may not be as fortunate as ourselves.

This is why for more than 20 years, Val Casey and the dedicated staff at David Hawke Property Services have run a Christmas toy appeal for under-privileged children in Bassetlaw who may not receive a gift at Christmas.

This is a fantastic campaign which people generously support each year.

They have already launched this year’s appeal – if you are able to, please support this worthy cause.

Finally, this Sunday I will be joining members of the Royal British Legion, current and former members of the Armed Services, fellow councillors, dignitaries and residents in remembering our fallen heroes as part of Remembrance Sunday.

If you also wish to pay your respects, a parade will be marching from the Old Market Square and arriving at Memorial Avenue at 10.50am, where a two-minutes silence will take place.

A service of remembrance will also follow at Priory church.
