Bassetlaw: Volunteers get a right Royal reward

The RVS, formerly called the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS), provides support for elderly people in the community.

Based at Bassetlaw Hospital, volunteers run the hospital shop, provide an escort service to and from appointments, run a community library service and can even offer befriending duties.

As the service celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, an appeal is being launched to recruit new volunteers.

“Our youngest volunteer here in Bassetlaw is just 14 years old. We would love to hear from people of any age, men and women, who can help for just a few hours a week,” said John Jewitt, service manager at Bassetlaw RVS.

“It is a really vital service and our volunteers are valued in the community. We want to keep it going for the next 75 years.”

The long service awards have been presented to their recipients, along with a letter from RVS chief executive David McCulloch congratulating them on their hard work and dedication to the service.

Margaret Dalziel, June Watkins, Patricia Payling, Pat Lakeland and Mary Turner have been given medals for 15 years’ service.

And Doreen Tucker and Pauline Hanson got a badge for 10 years’ service.

Mr McCulloch wrote: “I am delighted to award you all with your long service badges and medals in recognition of your commitment to Royal Voluntary Service.”

“Please accept my congratulations and thanks for the hard work and dedication you have shown in supporting people in your local community over the period of your service.”

“Whenever I visit our local services I am so impressed by the contribution people like you make to the lives of others through your time, energy and experience.”

“Royal Voluntary Service is special because of the commitment of its volunteers. Through volunteering we are able to make a huge difference, to help others get more out of life and to create supportive communities.”

“I really value your loyalty and commitment and I am pleased to have this opportunity to recognise your personal dedication to Royal Voluntary Service and your local service.”

“I hope you will wear your medal or badge with pride. It is also a visible way to show our gratitude for your achievements.”
