Nottinghamshire’s director of public health Jonathan Gribbin made the announcement yesterday after Public Health England data showed 399 new cases were confirmed in the county on Wednesday.

Tighter Government restrictions are expected to be imposed across large parts of the UK next week, but Mr Gribbin urged people in the county to act straight away.

He said: “Covid-19 does not recognise geographical boundaries so we must stand together with our local authority partners to do all we can to fight this virus across all our communities.

"The rapid and sustained increase in the numbers of positive cases is a serious cause for concern and the very dramatic rates in the city are a clear sign that action is needed now across the whole of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

“We must now ask every resident to do their bit and not mix indoors with people from other households."

In Nottingham, 235 new cases were announced on Wednesday, while the city’s case rate increased to 496.8 per 100,000 people.

1,654 people teste positive for the disease in the week to October 4, making the city the fourth worst affected area for new Covid-19 cases in the country.

Next week, the Government are set to announce new lockdown levels for different parts of the UK, with the worst affected seeing hospitality businesses close for an indefinite period.
