The Girls Active group from Outwood Academy Valley, on Valley Road, has been shortlisted for the Girls Active GLAMS Award, which acknowledges the impact girls are having on their PE curriculum and school sport.

The group’s members have worked with staff to introduce new activities to the school’s sports provision and increase participation rates among all age groups.

They have also successfully pushed for changes to policies on PE kit to reduce barriers to participation and allow students to feel more confident.

Karen Wells, a teacher working with the group, said: “The girls have been amazing during these difficult times to help promote active lifestyles in our school community. They thoroughly deserve this recognition.”

One Outwood student said: “One thing I have enjoyed about girls active is being able to make a difference as a team.”

Another added: “The best thing is seeing the enjoyment other girls have got from it.”

Since 2015, more than 800 UK primary and secondary schools have been involved in Girls Active. The programme is run by the Youth Sport Trust, in partnership with Women in Sport, This Girl Can, and Sport England National Lottery funding.

Trust chief executive Ali Oliver said: “Girls Active is as much about getting young people active as it is about harnessing young people’s talents and encouraging them to make a difference.”

The award winners will be revealed on November 3.
