Studio 21, High Street, Eckington, will be carrying out free hair services for people nominated by friends and family on Sunday, December 20.

Sarah Finlay, salon owner, said: “We’re offering a free shampoo, fre treatment, a high-end cut and blow dry.”

Studio 21 in Eckington is doing a day of free treatments to give something back to the community at Christmas after the year we've had. Pictured are senior stylists Donna Rake and Emily Standhaven, stylist Eliza Phillips, apprentice Millie Megson and owner Sarah Finlay.

The 46-year-old, of Eckington, said the salon had planned to offer a four-hour colour treatment, but due to the volume of interest, they’ve had to ‘scale it back’ so they could treat more people.

She said: “We just did a Facebook post and it went crazy – it reached about 24,000 people.

“We’ve had about 300 people nominated, so have had to dial it down a bit, but we just want to spread a little Christmas cheer.”

The idea was inspired by Sarah’s brother, Liam Anderson, of Lords Roofing in Chesterfield, who spends a day or two ever year at Christmas carrying out free roof repairs for people.

Sarah said: “He was telling me how grateful people are, how much cheer it brings everybody. I just thought maybe we could do something similar.”

The accountant, who opened the salon in November 2019, said; “It’s been tough. We’ve had to shut twice for lockdowns and for another week after one of our customers tested positive for Covid.

“It’s not been a great year to open a new business, but we’re lucky enough we have come back to a job.

“We just thought this is one day when we can bring a bit of cheer to people.”

“There are people with cancer, people who’ve worked hard in the NHS or schools, who’ve not had a chance to take a little bit of time out for themselves.

“The response has been amazing, but it’s also heartbreaking when you look at it.

“Some of these people have cancer, people who have had to escape domestic violence, we’ve had people who have been looking after their grandchildren while the parents are working throughout the pandemic – you just don’t realise what other people have been putting up with.”
