GAINSBOROUGH is Going For Gold this year as Olympic fever takes over the country and the Riverside Festival.
Two of the most prestigious roles are up for grabs as festival organisers begin their search for the 2012 Riverside Festival Torch Bearers.
The real Olympic Torch has already begun its journey around the UK and will pass through Saxilby on Thursday 28th June.
But with Gainsborough not on the official torch route, organisers of the Riverside Festival have come up with another way to bring Olympic spirit to town.
Primary school children aged eight to 11 are invited to apply to carry the Riverside Festival torch during the big parade, and set a glowing example for everyone who is watching.
Torches have been supplied by local fancy dress firm by Smiffy’s, and are ready to held high and paraded through town.
“The two torch bearers will lead the parade from All Saints Parish Church through the centre of town, and down the Riverside to Sandars Yard where the festival will be officially opened,” said organiser Gary Cooke.
“You will carry the torch, wear an Olympic style medal and sport kit to tie in with the theme.”
After the parade, both torch bearers and their parents will be invited to a special VIP reception with local dignitaries including councillors and sponsors.
“This is really your chance to shine and show Gainsborough what great kids we have,” said Gary.
“It’s your opportunity to launch Gainsborough’s biggest community event of the year.”
There is also likely to be a special treat in store. Last year’s festival king and queen were treated like royalty - driven by limousine to Blyton Ice Creams.
Gainsborough’s Riverside Festival is on Saturday 16th June and is expected to attract thousands or revellers.
Main attractions include the opening parade, 40 Riverside stalls, a fun fair, art and craft workshops, football skills competition, street athletics and the main stage with plenty of local bands performing.
Headliners are a Blues Brothers tribute act, who promise to have Gainsborough ‘shaking its tail feather’.
And the one you’ve all been waiting for... the fantastic fireworks finale has been given the go ahead to close the festival.
