Gaming Review: Resident Evil 4 HD Edition

Resident Evil 4 spawned many remastered versions after the GameCube died and I personally preferred the Wii version however the PC port was nothing short of a failure with its poor graphics, shocking frame rate issues and god awful controls.

Now though, we have a reissue of the mighty Resident Evil 4 developed and published by Capcom purely for PC dubbed “Ultimate HD Edition” boasting new HD graphics, controls and a solid 60 FPS.

For those who haven’t played Resident Evil 4, you play as the rookie cop from the second game, Leon Kennedy who has been sent to a remote village to investigate the disappearance of Ashley Graham who happens to be the daughter of the president of the United States. The voice acting was still pretty robot like however it was a lot more bearable in RE4 thanks to more personality. RE4 was revolutionary in another more significant way, it veered away from the zombie outbreak premise that the series made famous to crazy villagers. The new controls are a welcome addition although the improved mouse and keyboard support didn’t do a lot for me and it’s instantly apparent that this game was intended for use with a controller rather than fiddly keys. The display settings have also been improved allowing players to toggle with antialiasing, post processing, preferred locked FPS rate among others. The 60 FPS option made the game chug in the more populated parts, I’m not sure whether it was my card or not but the game played super smooth throughout on 30 FPS. It is still a joy to play now as it was back during the GameCube days.

The new graphics is the main feature in this version of the game. It more than makes up for the poor port that first came out which we would rather forget about. The updated textures give new life to this game as all familiar characters and locations look fantastic and the whole look of the game is certainly a big improvement over other versions however the original resolution of RE4 seemed to amplify tense sequences and captured the horror atmosphere perfectly. The spanking new graphics kind of disintegrated a little bit of that tension due to the sharpened visuals and there were some instances during play where visual glitches were present.

    The full Resident Evil 4 experience is here for PC players finally and it brings the best looking version of it to date. All of the iconic moments are here however the sharpened textures dull out the atmosphere a little bit but the gameplay is still as tight and as smooth as ever. It’s still one of the best games in the series.
