X Box Boxing Academy hoping to build on a successful year - in and out of the ring

A Worksop boxing club is hoping to make 2016 its most successful year yet.

X Box Boxing Academy on Dukeries Way, off Claylands Avenue, relaunched just under two-and-a-half years ago.

Now, with the season in full swing the club is experiencing its busiest season so far.

Club coach Chris Boyle says the hard work of everyone at the academy is paying off this season.

He said: “The club has 24 active licensed boxers from ages ten all the way up to adults,

“We have had 57 bouts so far this season and have already won 23.”

He says there are plenty of success stories within the club, such as Elliot Holloway, who is fresh from representing Yorkshire recently.

Chris said: “Our club captain and Central England champion has continued his great form and last month Elliot Holloway represented the Yorkshire.

“Elliot boxed a lad who was unbeaten with most of his fights finishing in knockout.

“But Elliot boxed with confidence and lost a decision on points.

“It was a massive confidence boost for both club and boxer as this opponent was rated number four in Europe.”

Elliot will now press on with preparations ahead of the England Boxing Championship which take place later this month.

Another rising star at the club is Nicola Hopewell, who nearly went all the way in her championship category losing in the national final at famous boxing venue York Hall at Bethnal Green.

But it’s not just in-ring where the club’s focus lies.

Chris is keen to stress that playing a part in the local community is also important.

The academy has been raising funds for local charities aswell as putting on self-defence classes in schools and colleges.

Chris added: “We’ve done various fundraising events helping to raise money towards Help for Heroes, Cancer Research, Autism Awareness and more locally Retford Cancer Care Hospice and Bassetlaw Special Care Baby Unit.

“As head coach and owner of the academy, I’m extremely pleased and proud of our progress both in and out of the ring.”

The club’s next show takes place on Thursday, March 17 at Stanley Street Sports and Social Club.
