Worksop's Leon Smith wins junior boxing title

Junior Worksop boxer Leon Smith has been crowned the East Midlands Youth Welterweight champion.

The Xbox Boxing-based fighter defeated Hucknall’s Ollie Bell, who had only lost twice before, after claiming a unanimous points win.

Smith had been putting in extra work both with head coach Chris bBoyle on Saturdays and Tuesdays with his dad Adam smith, who is also one of Chris’s coaches.

Boyle said: “Leon is a special talent, his work rate and fitness are second to none, but the toolkit this lad is equipped with is really something else.

“Leon’s like family to me so it’s fair to say I’m over the moon for both us as a club, but more importantly himself as this is just reward for the hours and effort Leon puts in.”

It is a big boost for the club who had six boxers on the Notts v Derbyshire event.

Smith was joined by Zac Layne, Josh Hartley, Theo Weaver, Kyle Finch and Thomas Whitehurst, who all performed well.
