The Worksop star finished three-over-par after shooting 76 in his second round today (Friday) and the cut came at two-over.

It was a disappointing end for Westwood who also missed the cut at last week’s Scottish Open and admitted afterwards that he was not enjoying his golf at present.

He had looked like getting back towards some form after a battling 71 on the opening day.

But a torrid front nine at the Hoylake course on day two saw him drop four shots, including a double-bogey six on the eighth.

Westwood hit back with a birdie on the 11th but another dropped shot two holes later put him back to three-over.

And despite having two par-fives in his final four holes, he couldn’t find the birdie he needed to secure his place in the field for the weekend.

Several other big names, including current Masters champion Bubba Watson and former Open winners Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els also missed the cut.

But that will be of little consolation to Westwood, who is still searching for his first major title.

His non-appearance for the weekend will also be a blow to his hopes of making the Ryder Cup team for next month’s match with the USA at Gleneagles after European captain Paul McGinley said this week that he needed the Worksop man to show some form so he could justify giving him a wildcard pick if Westwood didn’t qualify for the team automatically.
