The Worksop man, who is yet to win a major title but has come agonisingly close on several occasions, tees off at 1.26pm at Royal Troon with Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.

Els has lifted the Clare Jug twice, while American Mickelson won it in 2013, when Westwood tied for third having led after 54 holes.

Westwood’s best finish at the Open was in 2000 when he took second.

Last year at St Andrews he shared 49th place.
