Wesley makes it a hat-trick of Open titles

In a tense match against the ever improving Isobel Ashley, Wesley didn’t have it all his own way but managed to pull out the shots on the big points and took the title in straight sets 11-8, 13-11, 11-7 .

Ashley and Wesley met again in the final of the Open Doubles where Wesley teamed up with brother Tom to take on Ashley and Terry Emmerson in an enthralling battle.

The Wesley’s won the first two games comfortably but Ashley and Emmerson hit form to take the third game 11-6.

But both Wesley brothers played some excellent table tennis in the fourth set running out 11-2 winners to successfully defend the title they won last year.

Double partners they may be but all that went out of the window as Isobel Ashley and Terry Emmerson did battle in the Junior Singles final.

It didn’t start well for Ashley as Emmerson took the first game but Ashley got her game together and took the next two sets to take a 21 lead.

Back came Emmerson to take the next set to square the match at 2-2.

In the deciding set Ashley ran into an early 5-0 lead which she never looked like surrendering and eventually won 11-2 to take the title.

In her fourth and last final of the night she met Lea Dickinson to contest the Ladies Singles final, which Dickinson had won two years previous, but on this occasion she couldn’t manage to stop Ashley who won in straight sets.

Ashley can be very satisfied with her season in the Worksop League as she has also got the best individual average in the first division having lost only once.

Another of the Worksop’s rising stars Tom McIntosh met Jack Kirkland in the third division Singles final.

Tom’s brother Kyle won the title last season and Tom wasn’t going to disappoint his watching parents with his efforts to keep the trophy in the McIntosh house for another year.

He clinched the title in straight sets.

Kirkland managed to brush aside his disappointment of losing out to McIntosh by bouncing back to take the Handicap Single title with an impressive win over Dave Rix in straights sets.

The Handicap final is played the best of three games up to 21 and with the handicapping system Kirkland had to start 8-0 down, but managed to claw back the deficit in both games to win 21-17, 21-19 in a thrilling match overall.

Championship Finals night just wouldn’t be the same without what seems to be the ever present Peter Eyre who surely must have made more appearances than everyone else put together.

This year was to be no different as he first took the Plate Singles title in beating Matthew Williams, another young player who plays with a great attitude, in straight sets before meeting Andy Lee in what was a repeat of the Over 40’s Singles final from last year, which Eyre won.

Lee took the first game with Eyre hitting back to take the second to level but from there on in it was all Lee as he played some great attacking shots to end up winning 3-1 to take the title for the first time, and gain revenge for last year’s loss.
