Waiting game for Sam at European Championships

Worksop’s table tennis star Sam Walker was playing the waiting game in the European Championships this week.

The 18-year-old won his firstthree group stage singles matches in Austria, beating competitors from Ireland, Slovakia and Iceland.

But defeat on Wednesday to Sas Lasan from Slovenia meant he was waiting for the result of Lasan’s Thursday match against Lubomir Pistej, to see if he would progress to the final 64.

A 3-0 or 3-1 victory for Pistej would send Walker through to the knockout stages on countback.

The former Redlands player was England’s star on Tuesday at the 2013 Liebherr European Championships, beating top seed in the group Pistej in a straight games victory.

Walker, ranked 430th in the world, had already beaten both Marko Jevtovic (115) and Zolt Pete (139) in England’s victory over Serbia on Monday.

He opened his singles account with a win over Ireland’s Paul McCreery, and on Wednesday took just nine minutes to deal with Iceland’s Dadi Freyr Gudmundsson.
