They remain second from bottom in the North One East with their opponents taking a step closer to safety.

Dinnington retrieved their own kick-off but an attempt to exert early pressure saw a chip over the top go dead.

Malton used the scrum to set up their first attack, winning a penalty which was then advanced 10 metres to give them an easy kick to take a 3-0 lead after only four minutes.

A spell of kicking for territory by both sides followed before Dinnington were able to kick a penalty to the corner only to knock-on and Malton cleared.

Dinnington were soon back on the attack and came close before being stopped by foul play. A catch and drive was then also stopped by foul play which saw a home player in the bin.

From the restart Will Marshall went over to put Dinnington 5-3 ahead before the mid-point of the half. Dinnington made a break straight from the restart, getting into the home 22, and won a penalty but a quick tap did not work and they lost possession.

It was Dinnington doing all the attacking and the penalty count against Malton was rising. With just under 10 minutes of the half to play, after Malton had given away four penalties in quick succession, the referee finally awarded Dinnington a penalty try and sent another home player to the bin.

In the final minutes of the half, Malton stole the ball at scrum and won a penalty in front of the posts but the kick was off target and Dinnington went into the break 12-3 ahead.

Things started to go wrong for Dinnington as early as the first minute of the second half as they had a player sin-binned for a high tackle and Malton cut the deficit with the penalty.

Dinnington had a couple of half chances before Malton closed the gap further when they worked the ball off a scrum and scored in the corner seven minutes in. Six minutes later the home side were in front when another penalty moved them 14-12 ahead.

The home side clearly had the initiative as Dinnington struggled to get out of their own half and it got worse when they had a second player binned. Just before the mid-point of the half, Malton extended their lead when their number eight put his winger over in the corner off the back of a scrum.

Things were not going Dinnington’s way and minutes later an attempted chip over the top was plucked out of the air giving Malton a free run to the line. Dinnington’s confidence from the first half had disappeared and they were now having to do a lot of defending.

Ten minutes from the end Malton sealed the game as from a lineout they worked the ball through several phases before scoring by the posts. Dinnington did manage to put in a final hurrah as they kicked a penalty into the home 22 to set up an attack. Another penalty was quickly taken and Will Marshall claimed his second try of the game albeit too late to salvage anything.
