Trevor sets club record on 24 hour ride

Club captain Trevor, 54, notched up just under 333 miles during the Mersey Roads Club and RTTC national championship time trial held near Farndon, Cheshire.

The weekend before he had taken part in a 100-mile time trial, and the weekend after he rode 175 miles in a 12-hour time trial.

With a 50-mile championship race, two other club rides and training sessions in July, Trevor’s total mileage for the month was not much short of 1,000.

He said: “It’s the most I’ve ever done in one month and it’s not bad considering I work six days a week.”

“I would normally expect to do more than 175 miles in a 12-hour time trial but it was a hard Sunday, we had a head wind for three-quarters of the course, and I’d done the 333 miles the weekend before.”

He was the only Lincolnshire cyclist taking part in the 24-hour mammoth ride and finished 67th out of 82 riders. The winner was Ultan Coyle, of Rapha Condor CC, who completed just under 489 miles.

It was the only event of its kind in the UK this year.

Riders used three different courses, riding around all of them several times as directed by timekeepers.

Trevor said: “It was a great experience but physically punishing, it was the hardest ride I have ever done.”

He said riding through the night and into daybreak was mentally and physically draining and the finishing circuit was hard with three climbs.

Trevor owns Church Street Cycles in Gainsborough and has been riding since he was 17, but only took up racing in 2005 after being diagnosed as a coeliac, with several other food allergies as well.

After changing his diet he lost five stone, started entering club racing events and completed his first 12-hour time trial, riding 177 miles.

He has been Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club’s best all round BAR winner for many years.

The only other Gainsborough Aegir CC member to have completed a 24-hour time trial is Ray Newton.

He holds the men’s club record with a distance of just over 379 miles, done in 1968 when he was 23 years old.

Trevor has now established a new club record for veterans, 35 and over.

In January 2010 Trevor fractured the neck of his right femur in a freak cycling accident.

The joint had to be screwed together and meant a year out of racing.

Last weekend Trevor notched up even more miles, leading a 120-mile club ride to Dunford Bridge, the highest point on the Trans-Pennine Trail.
