Traditional New Year ride for club

Edwinstowe was the destination of the traditional New Year’s Day ride, which was the first club outing of the Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club, back in January 1936.

Four cyclists met at Roseway to take part in the 69-mile ride to Edwinstowe and they were Trevor Halstead, Paul Reynolds and Colin Smith with Daniel Nicholson cycling out as far as North Leverton with the group.

The outward route took the riders out along The National Byway riding through Sturton-le-Steeple, North and South Leverton, Treswell, Headon, Upton, Askham, East Markham and Tuford. Departing from the National Byway, the ride then progressed through Kirton, Boughton, and Ollerton before arriving at Edwinstowe and making their way to The Major Oak Visitor’s Centre for lunch.

The homeward ride took the riders through Budby, then joining Sustrans National Cycle Network route 6 and 647 as the riders used the Dukeries Trail for most of the ride to Harby.

The riders then returned to Gainsborough riding through Saxilby, Sturton-by-Stow, Stow, Willingham, Knaith Park and Lea.

Michael Dawson and Dave Day cycled to Saxilby attending the Lincoln Wheelers New Year’s Day meet-up.

The traditional Christmas Day ride was enjoyed by Loll Dickenson, Trevor Halstead, Dave Day, Paul Reynolds, Colin Smith and Mark Clark who made their way to Morton and then heading along Laughton Road to Swansea Bridge along Wharton Road.

Then the ascent of Carr Lane was made to Blyton and then on to Pilham Lane.

Arriving in Pilham, the group headed towards Aisby, then turned south to ride through Corringham before the A631 was joined for a short distance.

The group then headed through Springthorpe and Heapham, returning to Gainsboroguh along Heapham Road.

On Boxing Day five Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club riders, Trevor Halstead, David Day, Mark Clark, Colin Smith and Michael Dawson, met at Roseway in Gainsborough Town Centre to ride off the excesses of Christmas Day.

They headed to Morton using the new riverside cycle path and then followed the River Trent, riding through Morton, Walkerith, East Stockwith, Wildsworth, East Ferry and Susworth.

Departing from the River Trent, the group returned to Gainsborough riding through Laughton Woods and then retraced their route through Morton and the riverside cycle path

On Sunday 8th January the fourth round of the Gainsborough Aegir Speed Judging Event will take place.

Meet at Roseway, Gainsborough, at 9.20am.
