Tom sent to Coventry and returns with medal haul

The 14-year-old took five golds and a bronze at the 50m Coventry International Pool, in an event for swimmers in the Midlands East and West regions.

Atkinson claimed a gold medal and national qualifying time in the 100m freestyle, a gold medal in the 400m freestyle, a bronze in the 200m Backstroke and three golds for his part in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay, 4 x 100m medley relay and 4 x 200m freestyle relay A teams.

The latter came in 14 seconds ahead of the competition.

Unfortunately, the notoriously slow pool lived up to its reputation, making it difficult to achieve lifetime bests.

But the experience in the 50m pool will have given the swimmers valuable insight before further Midlands and National Championships over the next few months.

Emma Davies (13 yrs): 100m freestyle 1:04.88; 200m backstroke 2:37.95; 200m IM 2:41.35.

Oliver Taylor (12 yrs): 200m freestyle 2:22.44; 200m IM 2:44.82.

Ellen Dudley (12 yrs): 200m freestyle 2:30.92.

Samuel Templeton (11 yrs): 200m Freestyle 2:33.16; 200m IM 2:55.21.

Four Retford swimmers travelled to Ponds Forge on 25th and 26th May for the highly competitive City of Sheffield ‘No Frills’ Level 1 Open Meet.

Josh Stephenson-Ganner came fifth in the 1500m freestyle in a close to season’s best of 16:26.33, and Emma Davies also touched in fth place in the 100m freestyle in a personal best time of 1:03.32
