Title race hots up

Two of the three teams that are in the hunt to win the league title met in a thrilling contest.

Club colleagues DTH Redlands Tarr Babies and Allsorts fought out a 5-5 draw which really didn’t help either side in their quest to be crowned Division Three champions.

As in their 13 previous league matches, the Allsorts’ Tom McIntosh won his three games to put the Allsorts in the driving seat but they just couldn’t shake off the Tarr Babies trio of Alan Keeling, Antony Coupe and Matthew Mudd.

Keeling and Coupe both won two games each with Mudd winning a single game to ensure that the Tarr Babies came away with a point.

For the Allsorts Lee Bohan chipped in with a single win, while McIntosh and Lewis Comley teamed up to beat Keeling and Mudd in a close doubles match.

With two of the top three teams drawing it left Stanley Street B with a chance to take advantage and enhance their own ambitions to win the league title.

They were up against an improving Centre For Sport side who, despite playing with fabulous effort, were always going to struggle against the now title favourites.

The trio of Declan Wilson, Glen Gillgrass and Sarah Thompson put in some good performances but just couldn’t manage to get on the scoresheet and found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-0 score line.

For Stanley Street there were hat tricks all round for Matthew Williams, Glyn Williams and Ray Lucas.

One performance of note was in the doubles match where Grandson and Grand dad Matthew and Glyn Williams teamed up to play their first ever doubles game together which they won in three straight sets.

If it looks tight at the top in Division Three then the battle at the top of Division One is even tighter with the ‘sets won’ column looking increasingly likely to decide who will be crowned champions. Zygabytes A now head Division One by the smallest possible margin, having won one more set than DTH Redlands Fluffy Toys.

The Zygabytes dispatched bottom side Ryton Park Adders by a 9-1 margin.

For the Zygabytes both Joe Zygadlo and Dean Brookes won three games with Bob Hume winning two.

The only joy for the Adders came with a single win for Mike Nocivelli.

The Fluffy Toys won with the same scoreline over Stanley Street A.

Richard Wesley and Steve Walker scored solid hat-tricks yet again whilst Thomas Wesley enjoyed a brace.

The Wesley brothers teamed up in the doubles to beat Dave Hodgkin and Peter Eyre in a close contest.

Peter Eyre was the only winner for Stanley Street.

Global Marble were beaten 9-1 by DTH Redlands Roosters.

For Global Marble Steve Elkin played particularly well, beating Piotr Sliwa before losing to Rick Harris in five sets and Sarah Short in four.

Both Rob Vaughan and Kartik Lakhani took players to five sets and the doubles match also went the distance, in a match that could have easily ended in a draw.

But Sarah Short and Rick Harris scored hat-tricks and Sliwa won two to make sure both points went to the Roosters.
