Stubbing Lane men relegated

WORKSOP Rugby Club will ply their trade in the Midlands Four League next season, after Saturday’s defeat relegated them.

The Stubbing Lane men were beaten 29-7 at home to Kesteven, despite one of their better performances this season.

A Paul Roome try, converted by Andy Waddell, gave the home supporters something to cheer, but Kesteven – who put 50 points on Worksop before Christmas – ran in five tries to pick up the win.

With one game left this season, at home to Amber Valley, not even a five point win can save Worksop from the drop.

Alan Hopkinson told the Guardian that commitment was lacking this season, but hoped for a turnaround in fortunes in the next campaign.

He said: “The squad can only reflect that (a lack of) commitment to the captain Kiel Billam and the team as a whole by certain players is the biggest reason for the drop.”

“But the rallying shout from within the changing room is that we will regroup and come back fighting next season, lets hope this is backed-up by a change of attitude, commitment and respect which we see week in week out from our opposition and the reason they remain in this league.”
