Striders get out and about in the region

In a busy few days following last week’s Doncaster 10k, members of Gainsborough and Morton Striders AC picked out a number of races across the region.

Jerome McCulla, Paul Dagg, Dan Edwards, Phil Marsland, Kev Housham, Martin Edwards, Glenn Peniston and Donna Cook hit the tarmac of South Yorkshire for the second time in four days when they lined up for the early evening Askern 10k on Wednesday night.

The promise of a fast 6.21 miles with a strong field didn’t disappoint, and Strider after Strider brought home PBs as they crossed the line. Dan Edwards was again the fastest junior in the event, and broke the 40-minute barrier for what is sure to be the first of many occasions as he builds upon an evident natural talent.

On Sunday, Dale Parkinson joined elites such as the legendary Haile Gebrselassie on the starting line of the Bupa Great Manchester 10k and was inspired to another sub-40 PB. Donna Cook, Stacy Lyner and Jerome McCulla opted to run in the Shireoaks Towpath and Trail 10k, running as a team to come in around the 57 minute mark. Elsewhere, Ruth Wilson wore Striders colours in the Kimberly Triathlon – a 200m swim, a 7k cycle and a 2,000m run – beating allcomers to take first female and finish eighth in the overall standings.

This weekend Kev Housham, Jane Catley, Jerome McCulla, Clare Johnson and Mat Lyner will travel north to tackle the Edinburgh Marathon.
