Stars align for Bassetlaw Sports Awards ceremony

The best and brightest stars of Bassetlaw sport gathered at Worksop College last Friday night for the district’s annual sports awards.

Triathletes mixed with gymnasts and footballers rubbed shoulders with martial artists at Bassetlaw Council Sports Development Team’s flagship event.

And gracing the stage to dish out the 13 awards was a London 2012 gold medallist, Team GB’s Paralympic dressage star Sophie Wells MBE.

The 24-year-old also gave a short speech, explaining her attitude towards her disability and how she overcame adversity to take a team gold and two individual silvers in London two years ago.

A total of 64 nominees were shortlisted for awards, and all received a medal and certificate for their 2014 achievements.

Chair of Bassetlaw Council Gillian Freeman said the event was one the sporting community looked forward to each year.

“It’s one of the finest events on the sporting calendar,” she said.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to celebrate the very best of what Bassetlaw sport has to offer.”

Sporting volunteers, coaches, clubs and high achieving individuals were all recognised for results obtained in the past year.

And entertainment on the night was provided by the hosts, with the Worksop College Choir and Bert’s Big Band performing before and during the awards ceremony.
