A SQUAD of martial artists from a Dinnington gym have been called up to represent their country in the ‘world games’.

The Falcon Fight Academy fighters came through trials at the English Institute of Sport on Saturday to make the BFKKO GB squad for the WOMAA games in August.

Included in the squad will be female athletes Karen Dews, Kerry Norbury, Lee Morgan, Katey Adams, Rose Baker, Tamsin Baker, Danielle Wheatley, Loren Taylor, Beth Revell and Molly Cooley. Representing GB on the men’s team are Jordan Waring, Gracjan Zubicki, Robert Gronkiewicz, Luke Farmer, Sean Morgan, Stephen Macdonald, Scott Macdonald, and John Hill.

These competitors will fight in all the different styles taught at the Falcon Fight Academy, including points fighting, light contact, full contact, K1 kickboxing, grappling, mixed martial arts and kick jutsu.

Speaking after the squad was picked, Falcon head coach and GB selector Cris Janson Piers expressed his delight, but warned the fighters that the hard work starts now.

“I can see a lot of gold coming back from the World Championships this year, the team is very strong,” he said.

“Although our 100 per cent placing sounds good, I held a pre-trial in the run up to the GB trials and held back anyone who the trialing officers may have refused.”

“Those selected have done all the easy work, now it’s full on training until August, and anyone who lets it slip between now and then will be stopped from fighting.”

While Janson Piers admits he takes a hard line with his athletes, he says it comes from his own tough training.

“It may sound a bit hard, but I owe my need, drive and integrity to my late instructor John Robinson, he taught me so well.”

There’s no rest for the Falcon Fight Academy team this weekend, as Anston teenager Jordan Waring fights for a professional English K1 rules title.

Also in action are Robert Gronkiewicz, Garcjan Zubicki and Leif Taggart, all fighting on a show at the Epic Television Studios in Norwich in an event that will also be broadcast around the world on a live internet stream. And further down the line, Kerry-Louise Norbury has had a fight confirmed against an Italian fighter in June.
