Sports Awards to showcase young talent
THE 2011 Bassetlaw Sports Awards will raise the profile of some of the district’s most promising youngsters.
The ceremony, in December, will showcase some of the budding sporting stars who are registered with Notts County Council’s ‘Rising Stars’ fund.
The funding gives financial assistance to the sporting talent of the future to assist them to train and attend competitions to help them improve sporting performance.
The sports represented by local youngsters include athletics, badminton, ice hockey, speed skating, swimming, taekwondo, trampolining and table tennis.
Edward Thorpe is one of the sporting stars who will be profiled at the awards.
The youngster has been playing Badminton since the age of six years, is graded as an U13 Gold player, and his achievements so far include the Notts Junior Restricted U13 triple, gold and silver medals at Harlow, gold at Leigh and silver in the doubles.
In Under 15 competition, at Tees Valley, he took gold in the doubles and silver on his own, and in the Under 13 Nationals he brought home a bronze from the doubles tournament.
A spokesman for Bassetlaw Council’s sports deveoplment team told the Guardian: “Edward’s success can be attributed to his coaching, his incredible passion and never-ending enthusiasm for the sport.”
“He trains with the county squad, and is also coached by Dave Lindley, ex England international player, at a Badminton England Performance Centre.”
“Due to his success this season Ed is now being reviewed by Badminton England.”
Leisure and Cultural Services manager Peter Clark added: “We will be encouraging nominations for the Sports Awards for these young people for their achievements.”
“There are lots of different categories to nominate sports people, coaches, volunteers, junior teams, clubs and lifetime commitments and now is your chance to make us aware of the fantastic sporting achievements that have happened throughout the district of Bassetlaw.”
