Peter Fendley, chairman of Worksop Harriers, was recently recognised by Lord Coe for his efforts in promoting sport in the community during the Olympic year.

Fendley, who organised a Bassetlaw Games Torch Relay that visited every one of the district’s schools, was crowned a Community Games Shining Light.

And that meant a VIP invite to the official opening of the Copper Box, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on 27th July.

The 60-year-old from Bassetlaw was nominated for the award by Bassetlaw District Council’s Sports Development Team.

Tony Wright, leader of the council team, said Fendley was deserving of the recognition.

“I am absolutely delighted Peter was invited to receive his special thank you from Lord Coe.”

“Peter works tirelessly to ensure people in the Bassetlaw area have opportunities to access sport and physical activity.”

The Shining Light award caps a fine year for Fendley, who was a winner at last year’s Bassetlaw Sports Awards, when he picked up the Senior Sports Volunteer of the Year gong.

And Fendley has helped declare nominations for Bassetlaw’s 2013 awards are now open.
