Scunthorpe complete Dinno double

SCUNTHORPE’S fifth side completed a double over Dinnington thirds at Lodge Lane on Saturday, inflicting thir hosts’ fourth defeat of the season by 10-5.

In the reverse fixture, Dinnington were outplayed by Scunthorpe in a 36-3 defeat so they came into this game knowing what to expect.

Dinnington started strongly and dominated the opening 10 minutes but could find no way through.

As the half progressed it became an enthralling encounter as each side repeatedly threatened to break through only to be denied by some good defending.

There was no surprise, then, when half time came with no scores on the board.

The second half began in the same mode as the first had finished and it was hard to see where a score would come from.

Fifteen minutes into the half, Scunthorpe broke the deadlock when they moved the ball quickly out to their left winger who managed to get over in the corner.

Dinnington did well to stop them adding to this before coming back at the visitors.

Several phases of play in the Scunthorpe 22 set up the platform for Liam Parry to come onto the ball at pace as it was popped up from the base of a ruck and evade the attentions of at least six players to score.

Dinnington felt they were getting on top but five minutes later Scunthorpe broke away to score a second try.

This did not deter the home as they came straight back and had the visitor’s line under concerted pressure.

On the last play of the game they were awarded a five-metre scrum in front of the posts.

However, it twice collapsed as they went for the push but on the third occasion the referee blew for time when Dinnington were expecting another reset or a penalty try.
