Rushby stars for title-winning ice hockey team

Worksop's Alexander Rushby starred for his Midlands Conference Ice Hockey Team as they clinched the Inter-conference Winter Classic in Sheffield.

The Midlands side was made up of players from Sheffield, Nottingham, Coventry and Telford ice hockey clubs and took four wins out of four games against The North, South East and South West of England conference teams and Scotland.

All the games were played throughout the day which started at 7am and ended with the final game against Scotland in a winner takes all showdown, after each team won their first three games.

Midlands went two up early in the second period only for Scotland to come back in it with a goal of their own, but Rushby scored the game clinching goal midway through the period to make it 3-1 and put the game beyond Scotland.

Rushby plays with Sheffield Thunder U11s team which the following week won the Midlands U11s league title with their ninth straight win of the season, which will give them a chance of taking the national title at Sheffield in May.

Rushby, a pupil at St Anne’s Primary School, in Worksop, will now get a chance to be trained by the Great Britain IHA coaches in a series of coaching sessions at Sheffield later in the year.
