Tigers job is a perfect fit - Denton

The newly appointed Tigers boss returned to Sandy Lane where he had previously been head coach in 2015/16 and assistant manager at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Denton stepped into his first managerial role last season when he guided Rainworth Miners Welfare to a mid-table finish in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

He left that position after it emerged the Wrens would be stepping down from the league and when the Worksop vacancy arose he was keen to put his name forward for consideration.

“I’m delighted to be here,” he said. “The history, fan base and size of the football club all appealed to me and when the opportunity came up I wanted to be a part of it.

“It’s come at the right time for me. For my progression as a manager, for my backroom staff and where we’ve come from, I think it’s the perfect fit.

“When speaking to Worksop Town they laid out what I had in my head for the club going forward. I have the same aspirations and it’s come at the perfect time for me.

“I think it’s a professional club with a professional environment and that was something I was really keen to experience and be a part of.

And added: “Worksop Town has the potential, everyone keeps saying that, but the club needs to be out of this league. It’s important because this club is huge.

“I’m really looking forward to getting going, getting back into pre-season and getting back on to the field with the players.”

Denton will be joined at Sandy Lane by assistant manager Rob Poulter, coach and scout Wayne Thompson and goalkeeping coach Andy Wilson. Shannon Brooks will continue as club physio.

Denton and his team take on a side that finished a lowly 18th after a terrible run to the end of the season which saw the arrival and departure of Duncan Milligan as manager.

The new boss knows there is work to be done in getting the right balance to next season’s squad, as he targets competing at the other end of the table.

“It’s going to be a new-look side,” he said.

“I’m going to have to have a really good relationship with the club on how we’re going to plan things. We need to make sure performances on the pitch are right and of course I want to win games. It would be great if we get promotion. I want to be up and around there.

“I would be very disappointed if we weren’t with the other teams who are up there as well and challenging. We’re going to have some tough competition. We need to understand other clubs are wanting that opportunity as well. The likes of Handsworth Parramore and Bridlington are going to want success too.

“We’re going to have to compete with those. We’re not going to take any game for granted but we need to make sure the performances are right and we’re winning games. That’s how you make everyone happy.

“There are players who I have spoken to to be Worksop Town players. I’ve had several meetings. What I really want to do is to get into pre-season and make decisions based on the face-to-face interactions - not league tables or statistics - and work with those players I want in the 2018/19 campaign.”
