Dinnington beaten after slow start against Driffield

Dinnington just failed to recover from conceding two early tries as they started 2016 with 27-26 defeat at Driffield.

However, they did come away with two bonus points to maintain fifth place in the division.

Driffield put the early pressure on, working the ball through several phases before Dinnington cleared to touch.

The home side then won the lineout, moved the ball wide and scored a converted try with only two minutes on the clock.

Two minutes later, Dinnington lost the ball on attack and Driffield kicked through, winning the chase to the ball to extend their lead to 14-0.

Dinnington recovered quickly from this bad start and were soon pressing the home line only to knock-on five metres out.

Three minutes later they did the same thing and Driffield were able to clear the danger.

Dinnington then had to deal with a couple of home attacking moves before they had the home side under pressure again.

A catch and drive took play to the home line where Driffield conceded a penalty and had a player sent to the bin.

From the scrum that followed, Ryan Donnelly broke off the back to score under the posts and Jonny West converted.

Dinnington looked to press home their momentum, but three minutes later Driffield chipped over the top, collected the ball and had an unopposed run to the line to go 21-7 ahead.

Ten minutes before half time, Dinnington got themselves back into it when Andrew Pickering burst through before setting up Ollie Rodgers for a try converted by West. Driffield finished the half strongly and Dinnington were relieved that errors by the home side meant there was no addition to the score line before the break.

Dinnington knocked on in an early attack at the start of the second half before Driffield put the pressure on again.

The home side were awarded a penalty, which they took quickly only for a Dinnington player to block and get sent to the bin leaving Driffield to take the points.

There was then a spell of play where both sides came close to scoring only to be stopped by errors, but Driffield did manage to go further ahead with another penalty a quarter of an hour into the half.

Back up to full strength, Dinnington came on the attack and having seen one promising move get bundled into touch, they fared better a minute later when they moved the ball away from a lineout to set up Jayden Kohika for an unconverted try. Five minutes later, Dinnington were definitely back in the game when West took a quick tap at a penalty in front of the home posts to score and added the conversion to move Dinnington one point behind.

The last quarter of an hour saw Dinnington pushing for victory, but they never got within range and the only clear scoring opportunity came the way of Driffield but they were off target with a drop goal attempt.
