Race double for Aegir star Skelly

The youngster not only came home first in the club’s evening time trial, he won the 100-mile championship in his first ever attempt.

Skelly produced a personal best time last Wednesday, in an 18-mile event that included two climbs of Thonock Hill.

His time of 44.23 was just enough to pip fellow club member Julian Hesp, who also set a personal best.

The 100-mile time trial event on 14th July was part of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 100, on the A19, A168 and country lanes.

Skelly won the Aegir championship in a time of 4.26.56, and set a personal best for 50 miles.

Club colleague Trevor Halstead, himself a veteran of long distance events, heaped praise on the 20-year-old.

He said: “He’s coming on in leaps and bounds, there’s no stopping him.”

“He’s in his second year of racing with us, he’s a triathlete as well and he lives and breathes his sport.”

“He’s setting a personal best nearly every time he rides.”

The duo are back in the saddle for an even longer ride a week on Sunday.

Halstead explained: “We’re doing a 12-hour ride.”

“I’m riding for the veteran best all rounder, and Jordan for the best all rounder, and you have to do a 25-mile, 50-mile, 100-mile and 12-hour ride.”

In the 100-mile event, Halstead knocked 17 minutes off the time he set last year, finishing in 5.08.38.

The fastest rider was Andy Jackson of Team Swift with a time of 3.44.05.
