Race ace Ben Swift is back on the road

ANSTON cycle star Ben Swift is hoping to replicate his track success on the road, as the Giro d’Italia begins on Saturday in Denmark before moving into Italy.

The 24-year-old Team Sky rider picked up gold at the World Track Championships, but he’s back on the road in what he calls a ‘special race’, supporting Mark Cavendish.

“The Giro will always be a special race for me because it was the first Grand Tour I rode back in 2009 and I lived in Italy whilst on the British Academy,” he said.

“I’ve always had a good relationship with the Italian fans too and they are very knowledgeable and passionate about cycling.”

Former St Joseph’s Primary pupil Swift has vowed to focus on helping Cavendish, but will be on the lookout for state victories for himself.

“My main job will be helping Cav,” he said.

“But if an opportunity arises for a stage win myself I’ll definitely try and take it, whether that’s in a sprint or from a breakaway.”

“It’s going to be a great experience starting in Denmark and there should be plenty of chances for Team Sky to show what we can do.”
