Worksop's Sam Walker and Team GB men's team miss out on Tokyo 2020 qualification

Worksop’s Sam Walker missed out on a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when Great Britain were knocked out of the qualifying tournament in Portugal.

Walker featured in a squad which also included fellow Rio 2016 Olympians Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall, plus Rio reserve Tom Jarvis, and they knew it was their only chance to earn a place among the 16 nations which will compete in the team event in Tokyo.

The seventh-seeded GB started well by beating Argentina to set up a tie against ninth-seed opponents Croatia, in which the winner would confirm their place at the Olympics. GB lost then their hopes of finishing top of the second stage qualifying were dashed in a surprising loss to a 17th-ranked Hungary.
