Bassetlaw Triathlon Club members rub shoulders with the pros

After five months of Covid lockdown and only a few weeks of indoor training, triathletes from the Bassetlaw Triathlon Club competed in the prestigious Outlaw X event held in the grounds of Thoresby Hall.

The event provides triathletes of all abilities the opportunity to race on a truly beautiful course.

This year's popular event also attracted several of the world's top Triathlon professionals, including George Goodwin, while the women’s elite list includes Nikki Bartlett and Kat Matthews.

The triathlon started with a reduced swim of 750 metres in the clear, unspoilt Thoresby Lake within the grounds of Thoresby Park.

With a deep water start and a few turns to navigate over the course of the swim, it provides the perfect start to Outlaw X race.

After leaving Thoresby Lake, athletes then embarked on a spectacular single loop bike course which took runners through the north Nottinghamshire countryside, including Walesby Forest and Clumber Park.

There was approximately 2,000 ft of climbing, with the highest point on the course coming at 51 miles.

The athletes then completed their gruelling journey with a 13.1m run through 1000 acres of unspoilt countryside within the grounds of the historic Thoresby Park.

First home on a day of challenging conditions of cold temperatures and a chilly northerly wind was professional George Goodwin.

For the local club, James Gregory finished in a time of 4 hours 52mins, while the c irst female home for the club was Katherine Hall, completing the event in 5 hours and 54 mins.

As well as competing the Bassetlaw Triathlon Club gave a helping hand to the event with a team of volunteers helping at the finish line.

Club Head coach, Steve Chambers said: “It's been a great day for the club. It is so nice to see so many people racing again.

"It was a great local event and great to be competing with many pro triathletes.

“It is a great chance to learn. If your race didn't go quite to plan, evaluate, learn and move on.

"Sometimes expected times go out the window when the conditions are tough.”
