Olympic legend Linford Christie sprints into Worksop

WORKSOP will welcome Olympic legend Linford Christie on 16th June.

The gold medal winning sprinter is hoping to find a new sporting superstar in Bassetlaw, as he promoted Streets Athletic, 20 years after his greatest triumph at the Barcelona Olympics.

Street Athletics pits young people under the age of 20, from all backgrounds, against each other over a 60m stretch.

Notts County Council, Bassetlaw Games, Bassetlaw Council and BPL are all involved.

Rachel Clerck, sports development officer for the county council said: “In the year the Olympics are coming to London we are delighted to be welcoming Linford Christie to Worksop and promote Street Athletics.”

“As well as being a great activity there is a huge incentive for everyone who takes part as they will be competing for the national final to take place on 18th August.”

“The tag line for the event is ‘Prove it on the streets’ and it is great to have someone of Linford’s sporting stature at the event encouraging local people to get involved.”

Worksop Leisure Centre will host the event, which is free, and any young person can participate int he 60m sprint race.

Finals for each age group will take place, and the top three boys and girls in the Under 13, 15, 17 and 20 races will be invited to the national final in Manchester.

Entertainment will be provided by local dance groups, and registration is from 1pm, with races beginning at 2pm.
