Sunday school fun at party

OUR recent photo showing the allotments at Park Street, Worksop, brought back memories for reader Sandra Wright, of Dryden Dale, Kilton.

Her grandad Arthur Read had two of the allotments, which she said were owned by Mr Straw.

She said: “I would go there often and help collect the fruit and pick the flowers.”

“I can remember one of the allotments had a well which he kept a cover over. After he died my dad Fred Scott took them over and my two sons spent many happy days there.”

“Mr Straw used to call at our home 59 Potter Street on Sunday morning after church to see my grandparents.”

“On one occasion my grandma had just given birth to a baby girl and he named her June Rose.”

This week’s picture shows St John’s Church garden party in 1938, held in the vicarage grounds on Stanley Street, Worksop.

It was brought in to us by Derek Walters, 78, of Thievesdale, who is in the photo, aged four, standing next to the right of the woman crowning the queen.

He said the girl standing to him was Pauline Maslin and the boy on the left of the picture was Clive Swingler.

Mr Walters said: “There used to be a Sunday school at the chapel on Gateford Road which we went to.”

“I remember my mother making the trousers, which were green, and we had white shirts.”
