Pamela Mallender, 79, of Baulk Lane, Worksop, was delighted to see her grandfather William Raines mentioned on this page.

The story accompanied a photo of a horse-driven charabanc trip from around 1910, brought into us by Jack Tongue, 92, of Worksop.

Mr Tongue’s father Fred worked for Mr Raines and was a driver on one of the charabancs.

Mrs Mallender, nee Raines, said: “I think the picture was taken outside the Normanton Inn opposite the entrance to Clumber Park on the road to Nottingham.”

She said she remembers her grandfather well. He had a farm and horses, which were kept in a yard just off Watson Road, near where the Jobcentre is now.

She said: “We lived at 4 Watson Road but then when I was about five we moved to live on the farm up at Hannah Park.”

Another picture that caused interest was the one of the Palais de Danse, on Newcastle Street, Worksop.

Our information said it was one of several former cinemas in the town, but Winnie Tonks, 80, of Mansfield Road, said she only ever knew it as a dance hall.

She said: “I don’t remember it being a cinema. The four I knew were the Victoria on Victoria Square, the Essoldo on Newcastle Avenue, the Regal on Carlton Road, and the Gaiety, opposite where the Yorkshire Bank is.”

She said the Palais de Danse was popular with Canadian servicemen during the war and the Army police, known as Red Caps, were often called in to keep an eye on troublemakers.

This week’s picture shows Bridge Street, Worksop, around 1910.
