King and Queen visit Worksop

They came to Worksop in 1905 and are seen here being driven in their carriage along Park Street.

They were making their way back to the station and crowds stood on the roadside to catch a glimpse of the royal pair as they passed by.

King Edward and Queen Alexandra had been visiting the Duke of Portland at Welbeck.

The Greyhound pub and all the buildings seen here on the left of Park Street were demolished in the early 1960s.

The photo comes from a book called Bygone Bassetlaw published by Bassetlaw council in 1983.

It has been loaned to the Worksop Guardian by reader Geroge Gauntley, 68, of Howard Street, Dinnington.

King Edward VII was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and was born in 1841.

He came to the throne in 1901 on the death of his mother.

He married Alexandra, eldest daughter of King Kristian IX of Denmark, in 1863 and they had six children.

Edward was 59 when he became king. He died in 1910 and was succeeded by his son King George V.
