Guardian memories from 1966

It was brought in to us by reader Sheila Moore, of Kilton, whose husband Ronald found it in the loft.

It was one of three identical copies saved by Mrs Moore because it contains the obituary report on her mother Eunice Plummer, of Whitwell.

Mrs Moore, who is in her 70s, said: “I saved three copies because I have three children and I was going to give them all a copy.”

“As we were looking through the papers we kept reading things we remembered happening.”

The front page headline is about the election of Worksop’s new mayor, Alderman Harold Taylor, at a council meeting held at the Winifred Portland Technical Grammar School.

Another front page story is about the go-ahead for a new district hospital at Kilton. Worksop was to get £30m out of the £100m the Government proposed to spend on hospitals during the following ten years.

Ten-year-old schoolboy Billy Wallace, of Radford Street, is pictured after he saved his eight-year-old friend Robert Hall from drowning in the canal at Bracebridge.

Billy was praised by his headmaster at Newcastle Street Primary, Mr E Dunn.

Another picture showed the members of Worksop Inner Wheel Club.
