Cyclists line up in Clowne

OUR recent photo of a 1944 class at St John’s Boys School in Worksop prompted several readers to get in touch.

Jean Chalmers told us her late brother John Salmon was sitting second right in the middle row.

She said: “His nickname was fatty! I think he looks the smartest boy there, even though there were seven kids in our house.”

Mrs Chalmers also identified Pete Dane, far right top row, her cousin John ‘Chidder’ Bearder, third from right middle row, and Alwyn Keep, far left front row.

Another reader David Burton recognised Jim Newcomb, far right middle row, Ken Hugill far right front row and Brian Marshall, second right front row.

This week’s photo shows the Clowne section of Sheffield Cycle Road Club outside the town’s Anchor pub in 1910.

It was brought in by reader Louis Turner, of Boughton Lane, Clowne.

His grandad John Clarkson Turner is sitting sixth from right on the front row.

To his right is the local doctor Paddy Magee.

Mr Turner, 72, said his father Frank was a member of Clowne Wheelers, set up in the 1920s and which had among its cyclists Jab Salt, who was second in the country to the leading cyclist of the day Frank Southall.

Mr Turner said: “They tried to crack 24 miles in an hour and got very close.”
