Creswell singers hit right note

THIS week’s Archive Corner picture is of the Creswell Orpheus Glee Singers in 1910.

It was brought in by 85-year-old Guardian reader Eric Ford, of Doles Lane, Whitwell.

His grandad Enos Ford is pictured second right on the back row.

Eric’s two great-uncles are also in the group - Willis is far left on the middle row and Frank is fourth from the left on the same row.

Eric said: “I remember my grandad quite well, he was a miner at Creswell.”

“Frank was a piano tuner for Baldrys in Worksop so they were quite a musical family.”

Eric was an electrician at Steetley Colliery and said he used to play the organ, carrying on the family tradition.

Can you name any of the other men in the photo, or do you have any information about the singers? Let us know.

This week we are also putting out an appeal for photos from 1952 to go in a special Guardian supplement commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

We recently featured a picture of a street party in Worksop held 60 years ago to celebrate the Queen’s accession to the throne the year her father King George VI died.

If you have any similar street party pictures, or of other celebrations marking the event, please get in touch with some details.
