Angling photo leads to reunion

OUR recent picture of a group of anglers sitting outside The Grafton pub on Gateford Road has led to a family reunion.

The photo was sent in by Linda Ellison, whose grandfather Henry ‘Harry’ Hulme was pictured beside a table full of angling trophies.

It was seen by Guardian reader Peter Hulme, grandson of Harry and cousin of Linda’s mum.

Peter said the photo was taken in either 1945 or 1947 when the Worksop Federation of Anglers won the All England Fishing Championship - which is still held to this day.

He said Harry used to work as a colliery sinker and would go all over the country sinking pit shafts. He sank shafts at Manton Colliery and retired in an admin role.

Harry was born in Gateford in 1863 and died in 1950.

Linda said: “I have never met Peter and we plan to meet up as we both have different bits of family history.”

Left of the table in the picture was George Peacock, then chair of the federation.

His son-in-law Jim McFarlane said he used to hunt and fish for England. He worked as a builder in Worksop and died in 1975.

Linda also sent in this week’s photo which shows Harry Hulme, wearing a cap, helping to restock the Chesterfield Canal with fish.

She thinks it was taken in the 1930s.
