Local archery star Robert Gray is the new senior county champion.

The Nottingham Trent University sports scholar scored 589 from a possible 600 points.

After some early mistakes the teenager secured his win by scoring a perfect 10 with his last 18 shots.

The Nottinghamshire Archery Society’s president Terry Davey handed over the trophy to an archer he has watched progress from the age of five.

Gray is now looking to improve this performance, approaching a perfect 600 at next weekend’s British Universities and College Sports Indoor Archery Championships.

The former Portland student will face over 700 competitors at the Telford International Centre.

Gray has competed from the age of 8 with the support of his coach and father Tony and now trains and travels regularly as part of the Archery GB team, with six international events, including a trip to Korea, under his belt.

He moved from his home club Welbeck Archers to his University Club last October to pursue his education in parallel with his archery career.

Gray is a SportAid supported athlete through the Nottingham Building Society and is sponsored and trained locally by Lync Performance at Apple Fitness on Bridge Place.
