Worksop Basketball Club gave themselves a great chance of causing an upset in their opening Sheffield Basketball League Plate game, before a 10-0 spell in the final period left them defeated by Sheffield Starz 2.

The Division Three outfit secured the spoils with a 66-56 scoreline.

With the exception of that two minutes in the final period, there was little between the teams.

Starz were in front for most of the game but were never able to shake off a determined Worksop side.

The Sheffield side edged a high scoring opening period 23-20 before Worksop took their first lead of the night, 27-26, early in the second.

Starz regained control by the half-time buzzer though to lead 35-30.

Worksop’s top scorer on the night, Andy Fagan, came to the fore in the third period with some strong finishing around the hoop.

His performance helped Worksop into the final break one up, 47-46.

Fagan continued to lead the way in the final period as he moved to a season high 17 points.

But Worksop’s spell of wayward shooting was punished by the Starz who, for just those few minutes, showed why they finished a full division above Worksop in the Sheffield Basketball League regular season.

Worksop’s top scorers on the night: Fagan 17, James Roberts 12, Steve Lawes 9.

This Friday Worksop take on near neighbours Retford in the SBL Plate, in what will be the first of two ‘Bassetlaw Shield’ clashes this month.

The derby game takes place at 8.15pm at All Saints School, 95 Norfolk Park Road, Sheffield.
