Westwood’s 10th Players Championship at Sawgrass

This week marks Lee Westwood’s 10th attempt to land the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

The tournament has held mixed fortunes for the Worksop golfer, with three missed cuts and four top 10 finishes.

His best result came in 2010 when he tied for fourth place, and last year he shared eighth position on the leaderboard.

Florida resident Westwood has an early start on Thursday, alongside Martin Flores and Brendon de Jonge.

The 41-year-old will be keen to replicate the form that saw him land the Maybank Malaysian Open three weeks ago, and not the performance that saw him miss the cut at Quail Hollow Golf Club last weekend.

Westwood failed to extend his weekend after a first round of 71, one under par, was followed by a 76 on Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte – despite an amazing 84-foot pitch for eagle at the 14th.

Fellow Worksop man Mark Foster also missed a cut last week, when he carded rounds of 70 and 71 to finish three under par at The Championship at Laguna National in Singapore.

His best finish this year so far is a share of 28th place at the NH Collection Open in Cadiz, Spain.
