LEE Westwood is looking to send a message to the golfing world.
Worksop’s world number one golfer says he intends to keep his place at the top of the world rankings, as he gets back into the swing of things at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
After a holiday in Barbados and a couple of nights at home, Westwood flew out to Dubai last week to practice.
Today he was back on the course in the $2.7million championship, shooting a round of 69, three under.
Speaking before the competition he said: “It’s a honour being number one.”
“It was my ambition when I turned professional 17 years ago.”
“Now I want to hang on to it and that means starting the season well.”
“Having had so much time off last year with my calf injury, I’m looking to kick off my 2011 campaign well.”
“A win here would be the perfect start.”
