Worksop table tennis star Sam Walker has been in World Team Championship action this week in Japan, helping England in their bid for promotion.

The teenager won his game in the 3-0 victory over minnows Congo Brazzaville, before his England team-mates took on and whitewashed Turkey to confirm a place in the knockout phase of the competition in Tokyo.

Walker faced Michel Lignandzi and won in straight sets (11-5, 11-6, 11-5) in the match against Congo Brazzaville on Tuesday.

His fellow countrymen Paul Drinkhall, Liam Pitchford and Danny Reed then accounted for Turkey, before Wednesday’s victory over Slovakia saw England go top of Group G.

In order to stay top and receive a bye into the quarter-finals, England needed to beat Israel in their final group game on Thursday, or hope that Slovakia lost to Congo Brazzaville.

The England ladies, meanwhile, fell to defeat against Lithuania but remained top of their group on countback ahead of their last group outing.

Walker will be hoping for another chance to shine, as he attempts to impress the Commonwealth Games England squad selectors.
