Worksop had to battle even before the start of their game against North Notts on Saturday, with disagreements over the safety of the playing surface delaying proceedings.
But once the fixture got underway, the Worksop ladies ground out a 1-0 victory on a bitterly cold Saturday morning.
The delayed start seemed to impact Worksop, who started slowly and took time to settle.
Worksop had much of the play and forced the North Notts keeper to make some good saves.
But possession was given away too easily and both teams failed to capitalise on chances, leaving the score 0-0 at half-time.
In the second half Worksop had much more of the play and seemed more confident with the ball.
A short corner shot from Esther Gray forced a save from the keeper and the rebound was well followed up and put in the back of the net by Ailsa Gray to make the score 1-0 to Worksop.
Worksop were then able to sit back a bit and control the game more.
Some great defending from joint Players of the Match Rebecca Steeple and Helen Williams kept the opposition from creating any chances, but Worksop couldn’t convert any more of their own.
The final score was 1-0 to Worksop giving them a well earned three points.
They play Newark on Saturday in the last game before Christmas.
Meanwhile Worksop III faced their main rivals Beeston at home.
Worksop started the strongest with a multitude if shots on goal, only to be kept out by the post and the goalie,
The hosts continued to pressure Beeston’s defence with a short corner awarded, a fast ball out to top D then slipped back to Jo Pilson who slotted the ball straight into the left corner to give Worksop the lead at half-time,.
In the second half Beeston tried to dictate play but were shut out at every opportunity until a mistake in defence drew them level.
But Worksop didn’t give up and continued to pressurise Beeston’s defence until another short corner was given .
Kelsey Richards gave Worksop their second goal with a clinical finish.
Tight marking by Worksop helped them to hold their nerve to take the win, 2-1.
Lass of the Grass was awarded to Jayne Slaughter for her athleticism in goal.
In the final game of the day, Worksop IV drew 1-1 away at Southwell.
An amazing performance from youngster Sophie Forster in goal earned her the Player of the Match award.
This weekend the club’s second team will return to action with a trip to Notts University III.
The juniors face a busy Sunday, with the mixed Under 13 side taking on a trio of rivals at home.
First up is a game against Chesterfield, followed by clashes with Ashfield and North Notts.
