Threadbare Sheffield Steelers hunt new recruit

Injury-hit Steelers have their eye on a young British player to fill one of their vacant slots in the Sheffield line-up.

Coach Paul Thompson has been searching for some home grown reinforcements since the start of the season. Recently he brought in import Chris Lawrence, but has lost Rob Dowd, Mike Duco and Colton Frettter to problems which aren’t likely to be resolved quickly. All three are out of action this coming weekend.

Asked about his threadbare squad, Thompson said: “I’d like to pick up another British player and have been looking. It might be a younger guy we have to bring in and look to develop rather than someone that is more established because they are all signed up. But no Duco no Dowd no Fretter - that’s a lot of our firepower.”

Thompson juggled the line-up last weekend, using d-men Rod Sarich and Cullen Eddy as wingers. That worked, as Steelers beat Nottingham and Braehead, but it’s not a fix he would wish to rely on, especially as other injuries can happen.

“I respect them (Eddy and Sarich) for jumping into different roles; they know our injury problems. Luke Ferrara got some ice time and did well too.”

Thompson does not know yet whether he will be able to keep Lawrence for the season, the former Nottingham forward is on a short term deal. “We need to sit down with Chris, he is doing the business for us, he scores goals. If we get pucks in the right areas he will score. As a coach you want competition for places. You want as many opportunites to win games as you can.

“There are going to be a lot of injuries through the season. We are not as deep as some of the other teams” said Thompson.

Steelers also iced assistant coach Darrell Hay last weekend, and he did a mature, solid job on the back end.

“Darrell deserves a mention, he popped in, he hasn’t played since a Challenge game in Manchester way back in August. I thought he did a fabulous job for us.”
